An opening reception is planned for Sunday, July 11th, 2004 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Dont miss the other solo exhibitions being held in Flatlanders other gallery spaces!
Moving from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Adrian, Michigan in 1998, Brian Steele began teaching Art and Design at Adrian College. His photographs display a candid view of the environment surrounding him in Adrian. He records small town living, county fairs, porches, monuments, parades, agriculture, and parks. For Brian all of these things are ways in which communities declare themselves. They signify a shared history to the citizens of the community and a local value system to those outside It. He states: "[These images] are an effort to catalog a new environment as a means of comprehending it
Photographing these signs constitutes an attempt to understand them and my place, or absence, in relation to them." |
