Denise Keeley Flatlanders Art Galleries humbly presents a retrospective exhibition entitled A Life's Work: Denise Keeley featuring works from the twenty years prior to her death in 2005. The exhibition is free of charge and will be open to the public through November 12, 2006. A reception with Denise's family is planned for Saturday, October 21, 2006 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Denise always aspired to be an artist, and painted watercolours or explored other media whenever time permitted. After her youngest child completed college, she enrolled in Siena Heights University in Adrian where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1988. Denise became a stone sculptor and explored the human experience of being a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and yet, for many years, a faceless woman. Many of her works depict how the life-giving force of women triumphs over the silence imposed by a patriarchal society. Her struggle was not to catch a glimpse of their faces, she said, but to understand their souls. Her artwork also promoted AIDS awareness, women as victims of domestic violence, and the power of faith. In addition to eight one person exhibitions, Denise's works have been exhibited in travelling shows in Michigan, and galleries in Adrian, Ann Arbor, Toledo, South Bend, Chicago, and Hilton Head. In recognition of her Christian values through professional achievement and devotion to community, Siena Heights presented Denise with a Recent Graduate Award in 2001. Many of Denise's works and an exhibition catalog are for sale with all of the proceeds going to the Denise Keeley Scholarship Fund at Siena Heights University. |
