Ella Sharp Museum of Jackson, Michigan has once again teamed up with Flatlanders Sculpture Supply and Art Galleries for hands on sculpture classes. All of the courses are taught on site at Flatlanders by nationally recognized sculptor Ken Thompson

Upcoming Class:

Welded Steel Sculpture
(Beginning to Intermediate) This class is perfect for artists wanting to make welded sculpture! The course addresses the use of shears, rollers, plasma cutter, stick welding, MiG welding, TiG welding and grinders while producing a 'found object' sculpture and a 'box built' sculpture. Students need to bring leather work gloves, welding gloves, disposable respirators, safety glasses and ear plugs. Equipment, welding wire and gases supplied. Students will purchase steel on a field trip to the supplier.

Stone Carving
(Beginning to Intermediate) this course meets for five Saturdays from 10AM to 3PM. This course will address all the traditional methods of hand and power carving and many non-traditional methods. Beginning students will carve limestone while experienced students will work marble. Each student will complete at least one 100 lb. piece. Students need to provide: leather work gloves, safety glasses, disposable respirators and ear plugs. Tools and finishing supplies will be provided by Flatlanders and stone can be purchased during class.

Sept. 20 and 27, Oct. 11, 18 ,and 25, 2008


Mould Making
(All levels) this course will address the two primary methods of mould making (ridgid and flexible) and life moulds. This one day course is designed for mould making with materials from the hardware store that provide high quality results. Students need to provide a clean one gallon plastic bucket. All other materials will be provided.

Nov. 1, 2008 at 9AM to 5PM.


Bronze Casting
(Beginning and Intermediate) Lost wax bronze casting using ceramic shell, does it get any better!!! Work in the infamous Flatlanders foundry and create cast metal sculpture much the way it has been done for thousands of years with a late twentieth century twist! This course covers all the techniques from the wax to the marble base. Students are encouraged to cast multiple pieces. Students need to bring
   leather work gloves, safety glasses, disposable respirators and ear plugs. All materials provided with fees for excess materials used.

Jan. 10, 17, and 28, Feb. 14 and 21, 2009

5 week class: Sat 10-3pm

Thinwall Cement over Styrofoam
(All levels) This is great way to make larger scale sculpture that is inexpensive and plenty durable to be outdoors! Each student will make at least one 'human' scale piece. This method works in both directions, in as much as, it is both subtractive and additive. All materials supplied, but bring work gloves, disposable respirators and safety glasses.
