In Relation to the Whole: an exhibition of recent works by John Leyland

Flatlanders Art Galleries proudly presents "In Relation To the Whole", a solo exhibition of ceramic sculpture by John Leyland. The exhibition is free of charge and will be open to the public from August 3rd to September 17th, 2004. An opening reception is planned for Sunday, August 15th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

John Leyland‘s recent work has been inspired by the artifacts of Neolithic cultures and the archaeological information passed on through those items. These ancient artifacts and their physical and spiritual relevance within our present culture and cultures past have also served as an inspiration for Leyland’s large ceramic sculptures.

He states: "I’m very attracted to the physicality necessary for large clay sculpture and the earthiness of crude, chunky, clay bodies, but I also like to reflect on the subtleties and fluidness involved in the throwing process."

John earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Miami University and has worked as an Adjunct Faculty member and Technical Assistant at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan. In 2003, he received the award for First Place in the Toledo Area Artists Exhibition. He is currently the Ceramics Studio Coordinator of the School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.
