Born in Chicago in 1943, Don Rowe spent his entire childhood on a resort in northern Wisconsin. After graduating from Hartford University in 1968, Don began teaching at Olivet College. Of the small liberal arts school experience, Don says: " ...I enjoy working in this rural environment. It is gratifying to engage students for their entire time in college."

Being raised in an isolated environment had a lasting effect on Don, who says;"I find in recent years I have settled into landscape and still life, two very traditional subject matters that allow me to work from life in a direct way. I make images both because I want and need to create. I make art as communication both to others and myself, but I have never felt the need to aggressively market or show the work. For me it is enough to have the means and opportunities to make art, the reward comes from the work itself and the occasional connection it makes with other minds."
